About the BNP Paribas Open

The BNP Paribas Open, the world’s largest ATP World Tour and WTA Combined professional tennis tournament, returns to Indian Wells, CA, for an exciting week of heart-racing matches between some of the world’s best athletes.  The event originated as a fundraising event in Arizona before moving to the Coachella Valley in the 1970s; its founder, Charlie Pasarell, one of the best tennis players in the world, had a vision of creating an excellent competition in which men and women could compete.  When he became event director in the 1980s, he started making efforts to promote the competition through the media to boost its popularity.  These efforts, in addition to the construction of a new stadium in 1987, helped the growth of this event increase substantially.  Today, the BNP Paribas Open has expanded to include over 431,000 in tournament attendance, over $10 million dollars in prize money, and 29 courts with two stadiums.
