History of the ANA Inspiration

The first tournament affectionately referred to as “The Dinah” was held in 1972 at the magnificent Mission Hills Country Club in the gorgeous desert town of Rancho Mirage, California.  Ten years later, this Ladies Professional Golf Association event was broadcast on national television when Nabisco became the first official tournament sponsor.  1985 marked another significant year of the ANA Inspiration’s history, as movie star Dinah Shore was given the Patty Berg Award as thanks for her support and contributions to the realm of women’s golf.  Over the years, this tournament has continued to develop rapidly; today, the ANA Inspiration purse totals $2.6 million and countless fans flock from all over to attend this honorable event.

ANA Inspiration Traditions

Every ANA Inspiration concludes with the triumphant champion leaping into the legendary Poppie’s Pond!  Named after Terri “Poppie” Wilcox, an influential director of the tournament for many years, this picturesque pool is a famous landmark of the ANA Inspiration.  The tradition began in 1988 when Amy Alcott with caddie Bill Kurre decide to “let it rip.” Another tradition of this annual event is the presentation of the beautiful Dinah Shore Trophy to the winner of the tournament.
