Find an Amazing Outdoor Adventure at Murray Canyon Trail

If you’re coming to Palm Springs to get away from it all, go ahead and get away from it all. Located inside Indian Canyons, Murray Canyon Trail provides an amazing outdoor adventure that is both awesome and ancient. Native palm trees provide lush greenery serving as a dramatic backdrop to the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains with their rocky, stark gorges. In fact, the largest concentration of California Fan Palm trees can be found in the lush oasis found throughout Indian Canyons.  All of Indian Canyons is recognized as sacred land for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla people and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This certainly is not a theme park but the real deal.

Murray Canyon Trail is described as an easy to moderate hike which originates in Andreas Canyon and proceeds south. You can enjoy the trail on foot or horseback which leads you to a beautiful recreation area situated among the palm trees. If you are lucky, you may see an endangered species like the Peninsula Big Horn Sheep or the Least Bells Vireo bird. You may also catch a glimpse of other wild native animals like the mule deer roaming the canyon’s higher ground. The secluded beauty of the Murray Canyon trail will enthrall you even if you don’t see any wildlife so be sure to bring your camera!

Admission: $9 Adults; $7 Seniors (62+) and Students; $5 Children (6-12 yo)

Hours: October through June, 8 am – 5 pm daily; July through September, 8 am – 5 pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

There are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for your Murray Canyon trek. The canyon has very little shade so protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and appropriate headgear. There is no water along the trail so be sure to have plenty in your day pack. With the rocky terrain, wear appropriate hiking boots or sneakers, flip-flops and sandals will not serve you well. Also be certain to dress appropriately for current weather conditions.
