A Vibrant City
Palm Springs has it all
November 8, 2016
Cinema has the unique ability to touch both the mind and heart of its patrons without regard to gender, race or age. Film has the power to entertain, inspire and motivate its audience through vivid imagery and effective storytelling. Over the years, countless motion pictures have been produced which stand out as unique works of art. The annual Palm Springs International Film Festival kicks off the Hollywood award season and honors the films and filmmakers contributing to the motion picture arts. Now in it’s 28th year, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is one of the largest in North America and attracts over 130,000 film enthusiasts every January. Take a sneak peak at the 2017 festival and the history behind it.
Palm Springs International Film Society
The Palm Springs International Film Society is responsible for producing this prestigious festival honoring the culture and art of motion pictures. Through a series of lectures, multiple screenings and social events, the Society can accomplish their mission of public education for the significance and beauty of cinema. The Palm Springs International Film Society is a non-profit organization which hosts events year-round including the highly acclaimed Palm Springs International Shortfest held annually in June. The Society also offers educational programs to students throughout the year to introduce new worlds of cinema and provide a deeper understanding of cultures bridging the human experience.
Palm Springs International Film Festival 2017
The annual film festival runs from January 2-16, 2017. It kicks off with the signature Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on January 2, 2017. The Awards Gala is a black-tie event full of glitz and high style as the red carpet rolls out to welcome Hollywood A-list celebrities and local Palm Springs community leaders. Tickets are available for purchase but this event sells out FAST!
A popular new event is Book To Screen, which explores the intricate and intriguing way the written word makes the transition to the silver screen. Taking place on January 3-4, 2017, several films will have symposium panels leading a discussion and hosting a screening to highlight the back-and-forth process between writers and screenwriters to produce the final cinematic experience. Films currently scheduled for inclusion in the Book to Screen symposium include; 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi; Septembers of Shiraz; and The Late Bloomer.
Talking Pictures is a audience favorite where the creative talents behind cinematic masterpieces discuss their personal involvement with the film. Past guests have included Will Smith, George Clooney, Naomi Watts, Ridley Schott and many other Academy Award winning artists. The event is hosted by top writers and critics who lead the discussion after the screening of the film. The films and guests to be featured in 2017 will be announced on December 20, 2016.
