First-timers’ Guide To Adventure in Thousand Palms

First-timers’ Guide To Adventure in Thousand Palms, THE WESTCOTT

Thousand Palms, California is one of the many small towns which can be found in the Coachella Valley. Thousand Palms is located east of Palm Springs, California by traveling down Ramon Road and across Interstate 10.  With a population just over 8,000 people, there are adventures to be had here of both the outdoor and indoor type. Spend a few hours or make a day trip of both Thousand Palms’ adventures.

Outdoor Adventure: The Coachella Valley Preserve

The Palm Springs area is a great place to undertake outdoor adventures like hiking and biking. A favorite place for locals and visitors alike is the Coachella Valley Preserve. Nestled at the foot of the Indio Hills in Thousand Palms, the Coachella Valley Preserve is a short 30-minute drive from POSH Palm Springs Inn. A distinctive feature of this delightful haven is the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve where you can picnic and hike without user fees (though donations are greatly appreciated). With more than 20,000 acres of desert wilderness and 25 miles of trails to explore, you can take advantage of guided hikes during regular park hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from May through September and from 7:00 am to 5:00 p.m. October through April.

A truly unique feature of the Coachella Valley Preserve is the rustic visitor center pictured above known as the “Palm House”. Built by Paul Wilhelm in the 1935 out of palm trees, the cabin was home to the Wilhelm family and even served as a restaurant called “Last Chance” run by a niece named Dolly. Using only downed palm trees cut to a length of 10 feet then set in a cement base, the house was finished with clay to fill in the gaps between the logs and topped with a palm frond roof. Today it serves as a comprehensive visitor center with an impressive collection of artifacts and historical records.

Indoor Adventure: Agua Caliente Casino, Resort and Spa

On your way to the Coachella Valley Preserve, you can’t miss the signature high rise tower of the Aqua Caliente Casino, Resort and Spa near the intersection of Ramon Road and Interstate 10. Owned and operated by the Cahuilla Band of the Agua Caliente tribe of Native Americans, the casino is a unique place to play slots (including video poker and tournaments) and table games (including blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em and 10 other card games). There is a poker room plus a High Stakes Room if you’re feeling really lucky! A line-up of world class musical and comedy acts can be found at the 2,000 seat amphitheater known as “The Show”. Dining options include The Steakhouse, Grand Palms Buffet and Waters Cafe. Grab a  Paradise Rewards Club card as it allows you to earn points while playing and redeem the points for cash, gift cards or tickets for whatever show you might like to see.
