Palm Springs offers a great starting point to satisfy your wanderlust. Hop in your car and enjoy some of the small towns and natural wonders of the Coachella Valley and surrounding area.
1. Joshua Tree National Park
There’s a reason Joshua Tree National Park is a favorite of both locals and visitors: you will not find a more unique and intriguing landscape in the Southern California area. With over 35 miles of hiking trails of various distances & difficulties, you will find desert oasis, a gold mine from the 19th century plus hundreds of the iconic Joshua Trees. If rock climbing is your bag, be sure to bring along your climbing gear! After your day there, stop by Pioneer Town for some refreshments and entertainment.
2. Visit Idyllwild, California
A visit to the mountain town of Idyllwild transports you to an oasis nestled in the San Jacinto mountains with tall pines, sweet smelling cedar and legendary rock climbing. The small town atmosphere is pervasive here with mom & pop shops, restaurants and local businesses. You can enjoy hiking, shopping, bicycling, rock climbing and art studios. Idyllwild is also a great spot to escape the desert heat as the average temps are 15-20 degrees cooler than Palm Springs.
3. Outlet Shopping in Cabazon, California
When the shopping bug hits, you will find an exciting collection of 180 outlet stores at Desert Hills in Cabazon, CA. Shop to your heart’s content at Burbery, Frette, Neiman Marcus, Prada, Saks Fith Ave OFF 5th and other world leading designers and name brands. The Salton Sea is located at the southern end of the Coachella valley. The current lake was formed due to flooding from the Colorado River in 1905 although it had formed and receded several times over the preceding centuries. The Salton Sea thrived as a recreation area in the 1940’s and 50’s. It remains a “crown jewel of avian biodiversity” with over 400 species documented at the Salton Sea which remains a major resting stop for the Pacific Flyway.
